How often do I need to empty/drain my pool?
In the desert Southwest, especially in Arizona, you should drain your pool
every three to five years. The reason that in Arizona we should drain the
pool every three to five years is because we have such a high evaporation rate
and high evaporation tends to gradually increase pool water hardness. The
hardness is caused by dissolved salts that remain after evaporation. This
desolved salt contains calcium, magnesium, iron, and manganese. That's the
stuff you see eched into your tile at water line. Not cool.
You can reduce hardness by periodic partial pool draining, meaning that you
drain down the pool (about 1/4 to 1/3) removing some of the salts and
refilling with clear water.
Hardness will not generally present that much of a problem if your pH and
total alkalinity are kept within required limits but who does that, and
that's why it is recommended that in Arizona you should drain and refill you
pool at least once every 3 to 5 years.
